White House position threatens hunting rifles, says gun advocate

A gun ownership rights advocate says if the Bush administration has its way, any court in the country would be able to overrule the U.S. Constitution and ban guns for law-abiding citizens to use for self defense or even hunting.

Yesterday, OneNewsNow reported on the Bush administration's brief filed in the Supreme Court supporting the gun ban in the nation's capital -- and proposing that if a court determines a ban to be "reasonable," it be given discretion to ban guns in violation of the Second Amendment. Gun Owners of America president Larry Pratt says the administration's position opens the door wide for sweeping gun bans, including those for recreational purposes.

"[T]hey could ban people's hunting guns," he remarks. "That has been essentially done in Washington anyway -- not by an outright ban, but by regulations which make it exceedingly difficult to get any kind of rifle or shotgun."

But if an individual in DC is successful in obtaining a gun -- "and it takes months and months and months to do so," notes Pratt -- it must be kept in a safe with a trigger lock. "And one breaks the law when the trigger lock comes off," the gun advocate explains. And that, says Pratt, renders firearms completely useless.
