Katie Couric and the Corporate Media Gear Up for Iran Attack

David Martin, “CBS News national security correspondent,” that is to say he reads from a neocon script, reports:

A second American aircraft carrier steamed into the Persian Gulf on Tuesday as the Pentagon ordered military commanders to develop new options for attacking Iran. CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports that the planning is being driven by what one officer called the “increasingly hostile role” Iran is playing in Iraq — smuggling weapons into Iraq for use against American troops.

Of course, the Pentagon, under the sway of the neocons, has planned to attack Iran for some time. In their charming way, the neocons are simply telling you — via the corporate media with high school sweetheart anchor Katie Couric (see video) reporting — that mass murder shall commence sooner before later. Once again, we have Sec. Def. Gates declaring Iran is killing U.S. soldiers, minus any evidence whatsoever.

Even the CIA’s favorite newspaper, the Washington Post, was obliged to report when Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, declared “he has no evidence the Iranian government has been sending military equipment and personnel into neighboring Iraq.”

In October, 2006, Britain, “whose forces have had responsibility for security in southeastern Iraq since the war began, has found nothing to support the Americans’ contention that Iran is providing weapons and training in Iraq,” according to military officials.

U.S. officials are also concerned by Iranian harassment of U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf as well as Iran’s still growing nuclear program. New pictures of Iran’s uranium enrichment plant show the country’s defense minister in the background, as if deliberately mocking a recent finding by U.S. intelligence that Iran had ceased work on a nuclear weapon.

Iranian harassment? It was just five days ago a “civilian ship contracted by the U.S. military fired warning shots at two small boats approaching it in the Persian Gulf,” according to MSNBC. In order to provide legitimacy for this unprovoked attack, the Associated Press dredged up the specter of the the USS Cole, the U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer supposedly attacked by suicide bombers dispatched by Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda.

Not exactly, as the bombing was carried out by the Islamic Army of Aden, funded by Mohammed Jamal Khalifa, who was connected to the 1995 Bojinka plot. Khalifa was a senior member of the Muslim Brotherhood, long ago penetrated by U.S. and British intelligence, and ran the Muslim World League in Peshawar, Pakistan, that is to say he worked for the CIA and the ISI during the CIA’s effort to kick the Soviets out of Afghanistan. As well, Ramzi Yousef, a known CIA operative, was involved in Bojinka. But I digress.

How soon we forget. In January, the Pentagon claimed Iran attempted to provoke a “battle at sea” in the Strait of Hormuz. However, evidence soon emerged suggesting “that the incident did not involve … a threat and that no U.S. commander was on the verge of firing at the Iranian boats,” Gareth Porter wrote for IPS News on January 11. “The new information that appears to contradict the original version of the incident includes the revelation that U.S. officials spliced the audio recording of an alleged Iranian threat onto to a videotape of the incident. That suggests that the threatening message may not have come in immediately after the initial warning to Iranian boats from a U.S. warship, as appears to do on the video.” More sloppy work over at the Pentagon. But then the neocons, understanding well the megaphone effect of the corporate media and the naivety of the American public, didn’t really need to do a smash up job on their attempt to engineer another Gulf of Tonkin event.

As for Iran working on a nuclear weapon, this has all the validity of the neocon claim that Iraq had purchased aluminum tubes in 2000 to complete work on a nuke. In other words, there is no evidence of this, a fact sheepishly admitted by Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns and anonymous U.S. officials, as McClatchy Newspapers reported in November, 2007. In fact, even the CIA ponied up, admitting it had “not found conclusive evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons,” reports the BBC. Likewise Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who said last October that “he had no evidence Iran was working actively to build nuclear weapons and expressed concern that escalating rhetoric from the U.S. could bring disaster,” according to the Associated Press.

But never mind. You will hear none of this from the corporate media and Katie Couric as she reports the Pentagon as had it up to here.

No attacks are imminent and the last thing the Pentagon wants is another war, but Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen has warned Iran not to assume the U.S. military can’t strike.

“I have reserve capability, in particular our Navy and our Air Force so it would be a mistake to think that we are out of combat capability,” Mullen said.

No doubt the Iranians are well aware the Pentagon has the ability to “strike,” that is kill untold numbers of Iranians, and no doubt as well the Iranians are preparing for just such an inevitability, even as they dismiss such a “strike” in public pronouncements. Moreover, it does not matter what the Pentagon thinks, as it is firmly in the control of the neocons, determined to attack before the decider-commander leaves office in January, 2009.

Targets would include everything from the plants where weapons are made to the headquarters of the organization known as the Quds Force which directs operations in Iraq. Later this week Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is expected to confront the Iranians with evidence of their meddling and demand a halt.

Targets would also include Iranian civilian infrastructure. If you’d like a glimpse at what the neocons will do in Iran, look no further than Iraq. Of course, there wasn’t a heck of a lot to bomb in Iraq last time around, as the U.S. had taken out Iraq’s civilian infrastructure in the 1991 “Gulf War,” or maybe it should be called a turkey shoot. Former UN humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, Denis Halliday, “estimated that by 1999 the destruction of Iraq’s infrastructure and UN sanctions had directly caused the deaths of 600,000 children and 500,000 adults through malnutrition and disease. Tens of thousands more people, military and civilian, were killed in the US-led military assault,” writes Terry Cook. Iran understands painfully well it can expect likewise.

As for Nouri al-Maliki, he is simply a puppet and will say whatever the neocons want, lest the Pentagon refuse to protect him and he ends up suffering the fate of what another puppet (and former Unocal employee), Hamid Karzai in Afghanistan, almost suffered a few days ago.

If that doesn’t produce results, the State Department has begun drafting an ultimatum that would tell the Iranians to knock it off — or else.

Or else mass murder.

Unfortunately, the neocons are on a roll now, geared up with a slick corporate media campaign, including the services of America’s sweetheart, Ms. Couric. Some predict an attack against the people of Iran will occur this summer, others say this fall or around the election in November, but forget the precise date predictions, the neocons have told us over and over — and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen is simply underscoring — Iran will be attacked and reduced to Stone Age condition before Bush leaves office. Hillary and Barack are unconcerned — in fact Hillary reasserted her belligerence toward Iran the other day, so we can trust she is on topic when it comes to serial murder of Iranian toddlers and grandmothers.

It will happen before Bush leaves office.
