There is indeed a sensor that counts people over the door.

And it is NOT illogical that the sensor can separate people entering vs. exiting. It's pretty easy to program that, systems around the country have been doing it for a couple of years already. The sensors count both, such that one can calculate total passenger miles. But only the entering numbers are used to determine ridership. And I'm sure that the FTA is watching HRT very closely on this!
As for actual ticket sales, that would be a useless number. Someone with a monthly pass would only be counted once, even though they could have easily taken 50 or more rides. Someone with a day pass would only be counted once, even thought they are certain to take at least 2 rides, if not more, to recoup the cost of the pass.

Get a grip !

I support light rail extended anywhere. You gotta be retarted if you live in the beach and work downtown and dont take it. If you are too snooty to get out your car and want to sit in that jacked up flow of traffic in norfolk than feel free to look stupid sitting in the back up while the train goes by you...Also the rail to macarthur is cheaper than paying for parking and dealing with finding a space it drops you at the door for a $1.50...Just some minor things need to be fixed like the train waiting at 2 lights, should'nt have to wait for anything but the stops to get on and off...

We're going to need it

Gasoline prices are predicted to go to $5 a gallon within a year. The condition of 264 keeps getting worse and worse costing drivers more for vehicle repairs. Traffic tie-ups going in and out of Norfolk at rush hour keep getting worse too. You can bet Norfolk isn't going to be waiving or reducing their high parking fees.
As taxpayers, we're already subsidizing highways that aren't being properly maintained that can't handle the current traffic load without serious delays. We subsidize our airports and the airlines. Even our ports are subsidized with taxpayer dollars.
With the way things are going, an expanded LRT system is going to look mighty good in future years.

Of course you ignore the fact that over 70% of Beach residents want light rail extended to the Beach, and it is likely that when the referendum is held, it will win big. Of course, opponents will mount an irrational campaign of fear and distortion, but since they had already done so in regard to the Norfolk system, and the Tide has far exceeded expectations, such a campaign will fall on deaf ears now. Light rail serves so many segments of the community, in addition to the Navy, that it will be a great success in Virginia Beach just as it has been in Norfolk. Soon, as business growth occurs near transit stops, it will be obvious that we at the Beach need to move forward as soon as possible in order to keep our tax rate the lowest.

Funny, but I don't recall

Funny, but I don't recall the citizens getting the facts, much less a vote on whether or not to build the Interstate Highways back in 1956. Haven't seen many votes on highways since then either.
Not sure why light rail should be held to a double standard.

That so called "obsolete technology" was invented in the same century as the car you drive. So I guess we should throw both away!
On the other hand, that obsolete train is actually more modern than your car. It has more safety features than your car does. For example, god forbid you have a heart attack while driving, you're likely to kill someone else. The train on the other hand will automatically stop itself; unlike your obsolete car. That red light up ahead that you're going to run and maybe cause an accident, again, the train will stop itself if the operator tries to do the same.
Finally, on average it costs 70 cents per pax/mile to move people on LRT and 90 cents on a bus. So LRT is more cost effective!

And I'm sorry to say that you are one of those who don't understand Light Rail facts. The FRA chairman was speaking of heavy rail systems predominantly in his remarks. Systems like the NYC subway, Boston subway, Chicago's Subways & L's, etc. That's where the Billions in needed work are required.
Most light rail systems in this country are less than 20 years old and not in need of such heavy maintenance as required by the likes of NYC's 100+ year old subway.
So one could say that Mr. Rogoff was spouting Rail facts, or Heavy Rail facts. But it would be inaccurate to say that it was a "light rail fun fact."

You do realize that the bus you want her to take generally costs more to move people than that light rail that you claim will make your taxes higher?
On average in this country according to the National Transit Database it costs transit agencies 90 cents per passenger mile to move people on a bus, of which the taxpayers foot 66 cents per pax/mile. Put them on a light rail train and it costs 70 cents, with the taxpayers paying 50 cents per passenger mile.
So encouraging bus use will actually make your taxes higher in VB than would getting light rail built and encouraging its use.
