  1. They always project Africa in a negative light: jungle savages, cannibals, nothing civilized. Why then naturally it was so negative to you and me, and you and I began to hate it. We didn’t want anybody telling us anything about Africa, much less calling us Africans. In hating Africa and in hating the Africans, we ended up hating ourselves, without even realizing it. Because you can’t hate the roots of a tree, and not hate the tree.

    Philosophical Courage:

“Whether implicitly or explicitly, both [teacher and student] need the virtue of courage in its form as “philosophical courage” in order for the counseling to be successful. Moreover, the degree of such courage in both client and counselor will determine the extent to which issues are brought into question…… there is another form of courage—philosophical courage—required of individuals in dealing with their most fundamental beliefs and values. ….. I believe the best way to demarcate roughly the different forms of courage, is through an analysis of the cost involved with each form of the virtue…. First, with physical courage, the possible cost involved, at the extreme, is the physical loss of life…. Second, with moral courage, the possible cost is social rejection and isolation and/or a loss of “ethical integrity or authenticity”. Third, with “psychological courage,” the possible cost perceived by the individual is “psychic death.” …. And fourth, with “philosophical courage” the possible cost is philosophical instability where one’s most fundamental beliefs and values are brought into doubt. … it demands of the individual a confrontation with fundamental beliefs and values” -- The Role of Philosophical Courage in Philosophical Counseling, by Hakam Al-Shawi

The greater the psychological insecurity of a person; they greater the leverage effect of any form of self-hate psychological warfare.

A person capable of psychological and philosophical courage, is almost immune to self-hate psychological warfare.

For example: In a psychological counselling session; between a client and doctor, both philosophically courageous, there is no need for any psychological warfare; because the client has enough courage to sincerely listen to the constructive criticism of the doctor; about the psychological dissonance being experienced by the client.

It is only when a client refuses to listen to the honest simple working hypothesis conclusions shared by the doctor regarding the clients psychic-dissonance problem; that such doctor may resort to psychological warfare tactics to break through to the client, from a subconscious experiential backdoor to the psyche (so to speak), the message that the client refuses to honestly and impartially examine when honestly shared.

A good relationship involves, both client and teacher sharing their beliefs, and examining the underpinnings of those beliefs to determine whether they rest on solid facts, or tribal ideological delusions; to get rid of the ideological shit, and replace it with factually accurate information, that enables the client to grow and learn and thereby strengthen their psychic and philosophical courage, and in so doing their self love, knowing they are not engaging in self deception (which is the first inner primary form of self hatred).
