June 2023 News about the Earth.

The nation of America is witnessing Trump being charged by the same government that he once was the executive branch leader of. Some reports show that Trump may be scared according to a Trump White House cabinet member. Garrand defended the character and experience of Special counsel Jack Smith. Donald Trump continues to say that people who disagree with him are Communists and Marxists when he is using red baiting rhetoric, because he knows that he has a higher than 50 percent chance of being convicted if he loses the 2024 election. The trial should exist filled with evidence, proper procedures, and legal policies adhered to. Now, the legal proceeding will deal with discovery. Discovery is about the prosecution has to turn over the defense the material which is that basis of its case. Then, there is the presentation of motions from the defense and prosecution before Federal District Judge Aileen Cannon, who will handle the case from now on, including any components of the trial. Cannon was appointed by Trump, and she issued many pro-Trump rulings. Some of these rulings were overturned by the appeals court for the 11th circuit. Trump visited a Cuban restaurant named Versailles to see supporters. Trump has not been indicted for his role to overthrow the U.S. Constitution, the 2020 election, and the U.S. government yet. When Trump was President, he persecuted immigrants and refugees, encouraged police violence, used the military against peaceful protesters, and sought to declare martial law in response to the protests against the police murder of George Floyd.

Recently, on Monday, 7,000 West Coast Canadian dockworkers voted by over 99 percent to authorize strike action against British Columbia port operators. This comes as 22,000 dockworkers have been working for nearly a year without a contract. That is wrong, and these workers have every right to fight for their cherished economic rights. During this past weekend, the port of Seattle, Washington (one of the busiest ports on the Pacific Rim) was slowed down. Workers at that location protested the Pacific Maritime Association's (PMA) proposal to raise waged by a small $1.56 an hour, which is below inflation. Slowdowns are in some of the world's largest ports from Long Beach to Oakland. A large part of the world economy is based on the port system. Today, we have transoceanic container shipping. As of June 9, cargo worth about $5.2 billion was stranded off the coast of California, Oregon, and Washington. Almost 40 percent of all U.S. imports from food to computers including industrial products pass through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach alone. Dockworker strikes have taken place in recent months in the UK, France, Argentina, South Africa, Chile, South Korea, Germany, etc. The fight for economic justice and living wages continues among dockworkers worldwide.

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that makes a decades old law intact. This law prioritizes the placement of Native American children with Native families or tribes in child custody proceedings. The ruling rejects challenges brought by many adoptive parents. The law was passed in 1978 to protect tribal sovereignty after Congress documented the high number of children with Native American ancestry being placed with non-Native families or institutions in state child welfare and private adoption proceedings. The 7-2 decision back the law in the wake of hostility by the federal government in terms of child custody issues and traditional values of Native American tribes. Justice Amy Comey Barrett wrote for the majority citing that Congress did the right thing by passing the law. She was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts, and Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson. The Supreme Court decision in my view was the right on as it promotes Native American sovereignty and freedom involving children and custody issues. It’s not shocking that conservative justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented in the case. President Joe Biden praised the decision as protecting tribal sovereignty and Native children. More than 90 percent of Native American human beings have experienced genocide in both Americas. They are entitled to their basic human rights indeed.

There is work to rebuild the collapsed section of I-95 in Philadelphia. Engineers want to rebuild a temporary highway in a few weeks. A permanent reconstruction may take months or years. The demolition work is taking place now. This came after a tanker hauling gasoline crashed and burst into flames. The driver of the truck was killed. Pennsylvania’s governor said that the overpass being fully reconstructed will take months. Governor Josh Shapiro did not say exactly when the overpass would be rebuilt and fully reopen to the public. The tanker truck carried 8,500 gallons of gasoline. It crashed underneath the highway on Sunday. The person who was killed was a 53-year-old man named Nathan Moody. The northbound stretch of the interstate collapsed on top of the truck, and the southbound lanes were damaged too. Governor Shapiro declared a state of emergency and allotted $7 million in state funds for reconstruction. The movements of goods and services in the region may have delays. GDP grows on I-95 every day. The paradox is that the bridge was only a decade old meeting current standards. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the structural makeup of the bridge.
