Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Incoming president Barack Obama today finalized the appointment of a leading pro-abortion lawyer as his top legal counsel. Dawn Johnsen, a former NARAL attorney, will serve as the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Legal Counsel in the Obama administration.

Johnsen is a professor at the Indiana University School of Law, but she is also a longtime abortion advocate and worked for one of the leading abortion advocacy groups.

Johnsen was the Legal Director for NARAL from 1988-1993.

After that, she served in the Clinton administration as the Acting Assistant Attorney General heading the Office of Legal Counsel from 1997-1998 and as Deputy Assistant Attorney General from 1993-1996. She also served on the Clinton transition team in 1992.

News of Johnsen's appointment, which LifeNews.com originally reported in November, was upsetting to Mike Fichter, the executive director of Indiana Right to Life.

"Obama's pick is disturbing evidence that the promotion and advancement of abortion on demand will be a high level priority for the incoming administration," he says.

Other key appointments from Obama have disappointed pro-life advocates.

Obama chose pro-abortion Illinois congressman Rahm Emanuel to be his chief of staff and Emanuel has since been caught up in the pay-to-play scandal involving Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Obama also selected pro-abortion former Sen. Tom Daschle as his Health Secretary, abortion advocate Eric Holder as attorney general, and a top bioethics advisor is a leading embryonic stem cell research supporter. In addition, Obama is naming pro-abortion Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine to serve as the next chairman of the national Democratic Party.

Black Pro-Life Advocate Doubts Barack Obama Will Positively Change Abortion

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Incoming president Barack Obama ran on a campaign of change but one leading African-American pro-life advocate doesn't think he will bring any positive change on America's abortion-on-demand culture.

Day Gardner, the head of the National Black Pro-Life Union, notes Obama talked about reducing abortions during the campaign, but she says Obama's record will likely prove those claims bathetic.

"I think most Americans, me included, are looking to see what 'change' will come from the man who made the word his entire campaign strategy," she said.

Gardner says that, before Obama's election, "Planned Parenthood and other abortion organizations managed to kill 17 million black children by abortion since 1973, making abortion the number one killer of black people."

"Before Obama, 36% of all abortions were performed on black girls -- abortion facilities are still purposefully placed in minority areas," she told LifeNews.com. "Before Obama, Planned Parenthood ... received over 300 million of our tax dollars to continue the vicious dismembering and killing of innocent children."

Though she doesn't think Obama will do much to reduce abortions -- and will likely expand them by overturning pro-life laws and forcing taxpayers to fund abortions -- Gardner says she is hopeful.

"It is my hope and prayer that he will have the strength needed to refuse to be bought off by the big abortion guns and advocates," Gardner said. "I hope and pray that he will hear the small voices of black children and all children in the womb crying out to be born."

"I hope and pray that he will see that every child born and unborn is equal in God's eyes and therefore deserving of birth. Children are not expendable," she added.

Gardner concluded: "Abortion has killed more 50 million children in just over 30 years. On behalf of the children I implore you--the campaigner for change--to change that."

  1. Mr. Obama's appointment of former NARAL attorney Dawn Johnsen as the Assistant Attorney General for the Office of the Legal Counsel is clearly payback for her support of his election and the installation of yet another gear in Obama's Abortion Machine.

I could not be in greater agreement with Ms. Gardner as to her accounting of the past and her assessment of the present and future. And in addition, if the present trend continues, the black population will be diminished below the numbers needed for voting influence, far prior to the currently predicted 2038.

I fear Mr. Obama's change for our country will not be what those who blindly voted for him expected. I can only hope I am wrong for the sake of all of our unborn children.
