Houston, TX (LifeNews.com) -- A leading Texas pro-life group is continuing what has become a new tradition within the pro-life movement -- providing scholarships to college students willing to advance the cause of life. Whether it's promoting the pro-life perspective on their campus or after graduation, the programs are becoming popular.
This summer, Texas Right to Life will award a total of $8000 in scholarships to four eligible students through its new “Generation Now” pro-life leader scholarship program.
Chris Donatto, an intern at Texas Right to Life, shared his thoughts on the scholarship with LifeNews.com.
“The program is designed with an intensity that will benefit those students willing to work hard for the injustice committed each day when lives are deemed worthless in our nation,” he said.
Open to students classified as freshmen or sophomores for the fall semester at a four-year accredited college or university in Texas, the scholarship program requires students to implement pro-life projects and events throughout the year at their college campus.
To receive the scholarship, students agree to engage in pro-life training at the Texas Right to Life headquarters in Houston.
There, long-time pro-life advocates will thoroughly train and prepare each student to be activists on campus when the fall semester begins.
Melissa Castillo, who coordinates the scholarship program, explained the urgency to reach out to college-aged students.
“The college years play an integral role in shaping a person, regardless of the environment in which one was brought up. How can we trust that our youth are protected from the evil of abortion when Planned Parenthood has infiltrated our schools and universities?"
"The youth of today are more willing than past generations to stand and protect innocent human life," Castillo added. "Thus, current pro-life leaders must accept the responsibility to train and guide the young men and women who wish to advance the culture of life."
Wisconsin Right to Life began a similar program for college students four years ago, and Castillo hopes to expand it in Texas and urges pro-life groups to take it further in other states.
