Planned Parenthood Gets $363M in Tax Money, Abortions Rise
by Steven Ertelt | Washington, DC | LifeNews.com | 12/16/10 2:01 PMThe Planned Parenthood Federation of America finally released its 2008-2009 Annual report detailing its financial figures. The report shows it received more government funding, which has translated into more abortions.
The nation’s largest abortion business released a factsheet in September showing the number of abortions it performed in 2008 increased to 324,008, a 6.1 percent increase over the 305,310 abortions it did in 2007.
The total government grants and contracts received by PPFA affiliates from government sources including state, local and federal governments, increased from $337 million to $350 million in 2009. The new report shows that figure has increased again to $363 million, though it does not specify what portion of the figure was received from each level of government.
Government grants accounted for 33% of Planned Parenthood’s income cmopared with just 28 percent for private donations. Income from its abortion centers generated the another 37 percent.
In 1997, Planned Parenthood did about 160,000 abortions and received approximately $160 million in total taxpayer funding from various levels of government. Both the number of abortions and the amount of money received from government, supposedly for family planning to reduce abortions, has more than doubled since then.
Matt Smith of the pro-life group Catholic Advcoate condemned the new government-funding figures.
He told LifeNews.com, “The days of the culture of death earmarks must come to an end. If Members of Congress are concerned about how to pay for extending tax cuts to all American families, they can begin by eliminating the Title X funding which has proven to be a key taxpayer subsidy for Planned Parenthood to double the amount of abortions in our country.”
The report shows Planned Parenthood’s 95 affiliates operated 865 centers — all of which either do abortions, give out the dangerous abortion drug RU 486 (Mifepristone) or make abortion referrals. The abortion business says it has 33,000 staff and volunteers nationwide.
With government funding comprising more than one-third of its income, Planned Parenthood highlighted its domestic agenda for its donors and supporting in the new annual report.
* Planned Parenthood affiliates undertook more than 80 research projects on such subjects as…advances in abortion service delivery
* The abortion business used “security grants” to “upgrade” the “video surveillance” at several abortion centers which it admits “now allows staff of local Planned Parenthood health centers to view, off-site or on-site, activities by opponents of legal abortion inside and outside buildings.”
* The abortion business said it also worked to pass the ObamaCare bill that contains massive abortion funding, deny conscience rights to medical professionals who don’t want to be involved in or refer patients for abortions, and to increase government funding for family planning programs administered by Planned Parenthood.
It credited the election of pro-abortion presdient Barack Obama with inspiring Planned Parenthood.
“During this historic year, in which U.S. citizens broke historical barriers to elect new leadership, the vast Planned Parenthood family saw itself reinvigorated in its mission,” the report says.
The report highlights international activities in nations around the world where Planned Parenthood pushed abortion other countries, including:

“In Kenya, we worked with advocates who developed a grassroots campaign to increase public support for [abortion],” it said. In Latin American and the Caribbean, the abortion business “offered training for health center security and tracking groups hostile to” abortion. It helped abortion advocates in Nigeria overcome objections from religious groups.
Planned Parenthood also touts its partnership with Obama and his staff in promoting abortion worldwide.
“We worked with the Obama administration to protect women’s health and promote sexual and reproductive rights around the world, including overturning the global gag rule [Mexico City Policy] and restoring U.S. reproductive health and safe motherhood funding to the United Nations Population Fund [UNFPA],” the report said. “We also began work on removing abstinence-only requirements in overseas AIDS funding and increase U.S. foreign assistance for reproductive health, including $1 billion for family planning.”
The September companion report Planned Parenthood issued showed, despite claims to the contrary, Planned Parenthood’s number one agenda is abortion.
The document boasts that the number of adoption referrals provided by Planned Parenthood increased by over 100 percent from 2,410 referrals in 2006 to 4,912 referrals in 2007.
However, the total number of adoption referrals still amounts to a number equal to only one-third of the increase in the number of abortions done by Planned Parenthood affiliates.
Planned Parenthood also says it helped just under 11,000 women in 2007 with prenatal care and pregnancy help services.
Yet, prenatal care and adoption referrals resulted for only 5 percent of the total services provided to women in 2007 while abortions accounted for 95 percent of the services that year, according to Planned Parenthood’s own figures. (See image)
