Executives at 20th Century Fox were also reportedly angry over a voicemail message recorded by Nancy Cartwright, who provides Bart's "voice".

It was used to promote a Church of Scientology event.

The audio was publicised by a blogger but was quickly removed due to a copyright claim by 20th Century Fox.

In the message Cartwright begins by introducing herself as Bart.

She says: "Hey, what's happening man, this is Bart Simpson" and then laughs.

During the rest of the message, the actress switches between her own voice and that of the animated character.

At one point she says: "It's gonna be a blast, man!"

She then urges listeners to attend the event in Los Angeles on Jan 31.

Cartwright became a Scientologist in 1989 and has donated millions of dollars to the movement founded by L Ron Hubbard.

In 2006 she said: "Before Scientology I had one dream of making a living, from doing voice-overs for animation.

"After I became a Scientologist my abilities expanded so far and above what I originally dreamed that I've amazed even myself."

Other celebrity Scientology followers include Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstey Alley.

In 1998 she helped to poke fun at Scientology in an episode of The Simpsons which saw the animated family join a group based in part on Scientology.
