Providence, RI (LifeNews.com) -- Rhode Island pro-life advocates received a boost of encouragement on Tuesday when their governor showed up at a pro-life rally to condemn the thirty-sixth anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision allowing virtually unlimited abortions.
Governor Donald Carcieri made an unscheduled appearance at a rally sponsored by Rhode Island Right to Life at the statehouse rotunda.
"Let me encourage everything you're doing. Don't give up. Don't give up," Carcieri told the crowd of more than 100 people.
"You're on the right side of this issue, you know that. There's no debate on this issue," he continued. "It's pretty clear to me. It's pretty clear to anybody who thinks about it very long."
According to the Providence Journal newspaper, he added that he is concerned about "what's happening in Washington" -- referring to President Barack Obama's decision to overturn the Mexico City Policy and send taxpayer funds to groups that promote or perform abortions overseas.

The governor apologized that his wife was unable to attend, but the crowd greeted him enthusiastically.
Barth Bracy, the head of the state pro-life group, told LifeNews.com he appreciated having the governor stop by the rally.
"Tuesday we had a very enthusiastic crowd gather at the State House for our annual Pro-Life Rally. Young and old joined for one purpose: Life," he said.

"We had a surprise visit from Governor Carcieri who addressed the crowd. We also had several Senators and Representatives come out and show their support," Bracy added. "The rally was refreshing and stirred many to get involved."
