Virginia Governor Kaine Won't Commit to Bill Allowing Choose Life License Plates

Richmond, VA (LifeNews.com) -- Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, the abortion advocate who some claim is pro-life, won't commit to signing a bill that allows motorists to purchase Choose Life license plates. Members of the Virginia state Senate approved an amendment earlier this month adding the plates to an omnibus license plate bill.Kaine, who President Barack Obama named as the head of the Democratic party, claims he wants to reduce abortions but he won't commit to signing the license plate bill.

"When it comes to the governor's desk, he'll take a look at it and act accordingly," spokesman Gordon Hickey told the Washington Post.
The plates would allow some of the purchase price to go to groups that help women avoid abortions by providing them with adoption and pregnancy help. Of ever $40 spent on the plates, $15 will go to pregnancy centers.
Senator Ken Cuccinelli , a strongly pro-life Republican legislator from Centreville, is behind the amendment for the plates, which he added to SB 817.
"This was one thing that is fairly overdue," he said, noting that other states allow motorists to purchase a similar Choose Life specialty plate.
Senators voted 20-19 for the amendment with the plates, and now the state House needs to approve the bill, but Cuccinelli told the newspaper he thinks that will happen.
"I figure if I can get this bill out of the Senate, then it shouldn't be a problem in the House," he said.

The Virginia state House is typically where pro-life bills have a much easier chance of being approved, while the Senate normally has held up such bills because of pro-abortion committee chairmen.
Chris Freund, spokesman for the Virginia pro-life group Family Foundation, says he thinks Kaine will sign the bill into law once it gets to him.
"This is just another opportunity for Virginians to express themselves. It has solid support in the House and it should go to the governor's desk and we expect it to be signed into law," he said.
Prior to adding the Choose Life plates to the omnibus license plate bill, the Senate Transportation committee defeated Cuccinelli's stand-alone bill for them.
