Franklin is president of a large, international Christian relief agency called Samaritan's Purse (the name comes from the parable Jesus told about the Good Samaritan who helped a stranger in distress.) He is the son of Billy Graham, the most famous preacher of the 20th century. Historians say that during his 65 years of ministry Billy Graham preached the Gospel in person to more people than any man in history. In recent years (Billy Graham is now 90), Franklin took over his father's evangelistic work and leads evangelistic outreach around the world as well as continuing his own disaster relief work. Franklin is especially known for advocating for victims of AIDS in third world countries and for leading a considerable amount of relief work in the Sudan throughout the long years of civil war there. Even though his relief agency is very large with staff around the world, he is a pilot who often personally flies relief supplies into disaster areas or conflict zones. Franklin is also known for being outspoken about his opinions, and because of that the news media and bloggers love to quote him -- he often makes bold or colorful statements that stir up a strong reaction, whether positive or negative.

Not long ago Franklin joined other pilots in flying supplies to some isolated villages in Alaska after a fuel crisis. He took Gov. Sara Palin along with him on one of the flights, which meant that the news media covered it. I bet he regrets doing that because ever since then, anti-Palin bloggers have been on Franklin's case. They apparently have no clue about his international relief work, probably they don't even know about the genocide in Sudan or hospitals he has built in Kenya or all the help he secured for cyclone victims in Southeast Asia, they just know he was friendly to Palin, so they trash him.
