JFK's June 1963 address was the 1st time the moral authority of the presidency was placed behind black civil rights since Lincoln. JFK appointed 40 blacks to sr. fed positions (5 as federal judges.) His Justice Dept filed 57 law suits against local officials for obstructing blacks who wished to register to vote. He assured full integration of the NFL by pressuring the WA Redskins to end its racial segregation, created the CEEO & required all firms with fed contracts to impose EO.

FYI, JFK had the best legislative passage record since FDR's 1st term: of 53 major bills sent to Congress, he won passage of 33, more than Ike achieved in his final 6 yrs. He was not "weak in Vienna." Khrushschev, with a 4th grade education, was intimidated by Harvard honors graduate & Pulitzer prize winning historian, JFK, who created the myth of K's bullying to seek passage of his programs by emphasizing K's threat. The Turkey missiles were obsolete. (More to come)

Many of the richest American corporations paid no income tax in 2009, including G.E. & Exxon. U.S. revenues from corporate taxes as percentage of GDP are among the lowest in the world. Those European countries mentioned have very high personal income taxes which is why they have greater distribution of wealth.
When Reagan cut corporate taxes in 1986 it did not improve the economy for middle class Americans. The economy was already in high gear under a top marginal tax rate of 50%.

.If you check your history you will see that Kennedy planned to withdraw 1,000 troops from Vietnam by Dec. of 64 if memory serves me.He was very concerned that Vietnam would turn out just like it did.Had he lived i think the world wold be a better place, had Bobby lived i know the world would be much better off.
I do agree with you though, The Country started going downhill with Reagan. Clinton and I guess to an extent Bush 41 were the better presidents of the last 30 years but even they have a part in all the problems we face today.,W. injected all of Reagan's policies with steroyds and ran the country into a ditch, and Obama, for the most part, picked up where Bush/Cheney left off.

from history show that the CIA deliberately underforced the operation so as to compel JFK to send troops when the coup was endanger of defeat. This was the reason JFK wanted to "split the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it into the winds." He fired Director of CIA allen dulles, deputy richard bissell and others and put them under the Joint chiefs jurisdiction. He also had bobby use the fbi to keep the miami cia people from running boat attacks in cuban waters. and then they killed him
bestdayz11 2 months ago
There were a few more nuances there. Eisenhower resisted the Joint chiefs insistence to take Cuba yet allowed them to forge a plan. He was very weary of constant covert illegal wars and mentioned it in his outgoing address. What the CIA/chiefs were banking on was the next president would be easier to manage. Nixon was more bellicose than Eisenhower and they figured Kennedy would just wimp out and go along. When JFK took office he was surely advised of the program but readings
By 1991 the US economy was still laboring under the effects of that low tax rate though Bush41 did sign the tax increase raising the rate to 31%.
1991 marked what was at that time the worst economy since the Great Depression.
In the post war years, 1946 until Reagan at no point was the top rate lower than 70% and it was under those high tax rates that we had our best economies. At no point in that era did we have a stock market or real estate crash, financial crisis or severe recession.
Name one time that the U.S. has ever had a strong economic recovery under a tax rate as low as it is now. Go ahead and google it. It has never happened.
Obama wants to allow tax rates to return to the Clinton era rates that created 23 million jobs & a boom economy.
The big deficit you complain about is entirely due the Republican policies that got us into this recession. The Bush tax cuts not only got us into this mess, but they are the reason that Bush doubled the National Debt.
That anti-bad for you legislation IS keeping you safer. The Rethugs want to eliminate your ability to protect yourself from the malfeasance of others through legal remediation.
You should be more concerned with losing that right than the perceived overreaching that highly paid, extreme right wingers on Fox are bellowing about. Rush,Beck & Fox advocate against the best interests of all individuals & in favor of big business's right to poison the planet & Wall Street's to rip us off.

mindspring57: JFK did indeed show force in Berlin & bolstered the spirits of millions with an unforgettable speech denouncing communism that was heard and felt at home, in Germany, and around the world - denoting the eventual demise of that totalitarian system. And he was right. It was unsustainable. He had faith in people to self-determine their belief system & political future & history has proven him right. You need to rid yourself of your Neo-con conditioning & see the past accurately.

FYI, Clueless: Ike did almost nothing. JFK ordered U.S. Marshals to protect Freedom Riders in Alabama in 61, called in the Natl Guard to ensure Jim Merediths enrollment at Ol Miss in 62.
On 6/6/63 he proposed legislation to guarantee equal treatment of every American regardless of race in voting rights, public accommodations, school desegregation, nondiscrimination in federally assisted programs, & more - passed in 64. Your claim that he placated the Soviets is laughable. You know NOTHING.

JFK hardly "backed down." He showed force at the wall in Berlin via massing troops & tanks; he placed our military at full nuclear alert in the CMC causing "the cccp" to back down (READ YOUR HISTORY) & thru strength was able to peacefully negotiate a settlement even while the CIA & JCOS did all they could to make the conflict go hot. And if you read his June 11, 1963 address, his use of U.S. martials & his Civil Rights legislation proposal (passed after his death) yes, he CHAMPIONED that cause.

Again. I will make it simple for you. Name one time in the last 100 years when the US economy has emerged from a recession with a top tax rate as low as it is now.
The lowest unemployment rate ever recorded, 2.5%, was in May-June of 1953 when the top marginal tax rate was 91%.
The period of the lowest tax rates of the last 97 years was from 1925-1929 when the top rate started at 28% & by 1929 was down to 24%. That brief period of record low taxes was followed by the Great Depression.

V44: JFK "sucked" as prez? Please! Under him, the U.S. had the greatest sustained economic growth in more than a century. His mastery of conflict resolution in Laos, Berlin, & Cuba literally saved humanity from nuclear conflagration. He put the power of the presidency behind civil rights - the 1st to do so since Lincoln! He ordered all U.S. troops home from 'nam by '65 with NSCM263. He championed support for the mentally retarded, expanded the arts & sciences & led us into space exploration.

BOP was a CIA bogus op. JFK sent your Dad to 'Nam but NOT in a combat capacity. THAT idiotic decision came from LBJ & the JCOS after the CIA staged the faux Tonkin Gulf incident. Kennedy was NOT escalating the Vietnam conflict. He was sending all U.S. troops home by '65 with executive order NSCM263 @ the rate of 1k per month, reversed by LBJ within 72 hrs of JFK death. You have been victimized by NeoCon revisionism designed to posthumously assassinate JFK & deter inquiry into the coup of '63.

Ike detested Nixon & did not want him to be president. Moreover, Nixon was determined to reverse the 1960 outcome, ordering Thurston Morton to file suit in numerous states until Bob Finch & others, investigating allegations of election fraud, discovered that the G.O.P. would actually lose several more states & more electoral votes owing to their own mass irregularities. As for Gore, he had no recourse, a Republican majority on the Supreme Court appointed "Dubya" president by 1 electoral vote.

Again: In 60 Nixon asked rightwing NY journalist pal E. Mazo to launch a press frenzy alleging vote fraud & Sen. T. Morton to demand recounts in 11 states. Aides Finch & Hall field-checked votes in 12 states via U.S. Attorneys, FBI, grand juries, lawsuits & appeals to state election commissions, but found more G.O.P. fraud than Demo fraud. Nixon conceded. Political scientist Ed Kallinas '88 study of the IL recount proved the state fairly won by JFK, despite gross G.O.P. irregularities downstate.

Reagan ushered in the era of huge deficits & his reckless spending increased the debt by a greater % than any president in history.
Reagan's successful tax cut was the one that cut the top rate to 50%. That was the rate in '84 during the recovery that was his greatest success as president.
It was in 1987 that he cut the top rate to 28%. That cut created stock market bubble that burst in Oct '87 resulting in the first market crash since the last time taxes were that low in the 1920's.

In 1968, Nixon's first choice for VP running mate was Vince Lombardi. After Nixon aides inquired into Lombardi's political views they had to inform Dick that Vince had voted for JFK and considered himself a Kennedy Democrat.

JFK was President for less than 3 years. He delt with the steel companies when they increased the price of steel. He signed the Test Ban Treaty which saved our atmosphere. He put the civil rights bill in congress and donated all his salary to charity. No President has ever done that. RFK did the same thing & his salary was a lot less. He saved us from nuclear war, cracked down on the mob and Hoffa. I've already mentioned Vietnam. He was nothing like the Bush's. A lot of people loved him.
1916jutland 1 year ago
As president, JFK indicted & convicted more mob figures than all other presidents combined. Nixon, as prez, wrote more Executive pardons for mafiosi than any other Chief Exec. But Tricky Dick owed his career to mob associates, from 1947's Mickey Cohen, to 1960s Rosselli, Giancana, Marcello, & Hoffa. FYI: the mob did NOT kill JFK, who was killed by a coterie of rightwing CIA, JCOS, FBI, SS, & Wall St/Oil oligarchs using expendable mob hit men & ambitious pols (LBJ & Nixon) to cover up the coup.
You have a woeful misconception of John Kennedy's political beliefs. Read "A Nation of Immigrants," "The Strategy of Peace," "To Turn the Tide," "The Burden & The Glory," "Profiles in Courage," & "Why England Slept." JFK was 100% a Democrat in the tradition of the party's founder, Thomas Jefferson, as well as Jackson, with elements of Wilson & FDR. He has NOTHING in common with today's G.O.P. Such comments as yours are precisely why I am writing a book on his political philosophy.
