It disappoint s me how Tyler Perry seeks to legitimize his degrading of blacks, by saying we are doing it ourselves. You shouldn't seek to degrade us, but to bring us up onto the level of whites, or rewrite that social perspectiv e with your characters and writings. He does not do that, and therefore Spike Lee has basis in his argument. Tyler Perry should seek to change these social beliefs and norms and create a new black perspectiv e. "For Colored Girls" did not help the situation at all, but "Precious" did by making it seem as though blacks or people in general can move further than what society or someone limits them too.

I really can't stand the caricature s of many of TP's films. However there is one benefit. He keeps black actors employed.
Many people were upset with the stereotype s of blaxploita tion films in the 70's. But today Marvin Van Peebles is seen as a revolution ary.
It is a shame that white directors find no problem turning novels into movies by writers like Nicolas Sparks, Jodi Picoult, John Gresham, etc. but black directors ignore great literary works by the likes of Octavia Butler, Bebe Moore Campbell and Pearl Cleage. If those writers are too simple for the target audience get a book by E. Lynn Harris, Omar Tyree or Eric Jerome Dickey. All I know is we have to stop supporting the garbage, so that directors like TP will stop making it.

Spike has a point. There is coonery and buffoonery in Perry's films. The difference , though is that in the days of Amos & Andy white audiences were laughing at these stereotype s. Perry's audiences are predominan tly black. His films are stereotype s like Amos & Andy, but it's not done in a malicious manner.
I'm with Spike on this one. Perry and his movies do way more harm than good. And he's anti-union to boot.
I'm a little peturbed at how people project their sensitivit ies and biases into over judging movies and tv shows. Yes blacks were caricature d in movies/tv during most of the 20th century but as the art has evolved our tendencies to react with suspicion must evolve also. The flip side to this is also true and equally as bothersome . I remember how offended my white schoolmate s were that the Cosby Show portrayed "all black families" as being educated and together.
Art is important. It both shapes and reflect how we, especially our children, see ourselves. But there has to be a balance so that we're not exaggerati ng its intent.

Well instead of bashing, Spike should have offered guidance. He has been in the game a long time. Perry is the newcomer. We should help each other not tear each other down. It shouldn't be my way or the high way for Spike. But I do see how he could be mad. I mean people take these stereotype s and run with them. I guess he would like to see different aspects of blacks instead of "Daaammmn! " and grannines toting pistols. And sometimes Perry does portray the blacks that do well for themselves as "looking down on their own people", but that happens in real life too. I guess Spike is like okay we've seen that now what else?

Spike Lee's criticism is not without merit; Tyler Perry's works have the tendency to support the "status quo" in the African-Am erican community. It is filled with caricature s that lack any depth, so it does absolutely nothing to advance the idea that black communitie s can be as diverse as any other community, and that not everyone falls into this neat little stereotype that exists in Tyler Perry's world.
That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with celebratin g many positive aspects of said "status quo." There's nothing wrong with celebratin g strong, independen t-minded black women. There's nothing wrong with celebratin g the extended family and the role grandparen ts play in black communitie s. And more importantl y, there's nothing wrong with celebratin g the sense of community and shared struggle prevalent throughout .
Tyler Perry does nothing to advance African Americans. ..but I don't think he hurts them either. His is just innocent, vacuous entertainm ent.

I'm with Spike. Dressing black men as women was historical ly a method to emasculate black men, which harkens back to what Spike was referring to as the Amos and Andy, Step n Fetchit portrayal of black men in film and tv. And Perry is perpetuati ng that degrading practice. I won't watch anything with his name on it. But that's me.
The problem people have with Tyler Perry is that his movise has no balance meaning he tends to villanize black men and he tends to make movies that are stereotypical.Nobody pretends that the characters he has in his movies and shows don`t exist in real life, the problem is he acts like other types of blacks don`t exist. Those images he portrays does have a negative effect on blacks cause it effects how we view ourselves. And many blacks were critical of New Jack City and other gangster movies.

I agree, and part of the problem (the war game) is most poor black communities have little access to AFFORDABLE fresh fruits and vegetables, so they eat what is cheap, tasty, and filling
the same thing POOR white folks do, they eat the cheapest food
education and better food choices will solve SOME of our problems, but until the black collective faces the FACT that war is being waged against us, to destroy our health and shorten our lives, we won’t understand “their” next counter-move…

They are developing faster because of all the HORMONES in our food, especially meat, and especially the FAST FOOD that too many of us feed our children. The food brought into the black communities is (probably) deliberately OVERLOADED WITH HORMONES, the kind that is pumped into the cattle and chicken to make them grow FASTER AND BIGGER.

Does a particular fried chicken fast food franchise come to mind when you think of OVERSIZED CHICKEN BREASTS?
—
Developing faster and reaching puberty sooner means they have SPED UP YOUR BODY CLOCK, which means you reach the END OF YOUR LIFE SOONER. It means you develop diseases that normally happen with older people SOONER. It means you are more prone to things like breast and colon cancer and heart disease at an EARLIER AGE
—
We need to educate ourselves about what is happening to us and WHY it is happening to us. There is nothing cute or innocent about more black girls (than any other race) suddenly reaching puberty at the age of 7, it is a warning that something is happening with our food.

Some like to dismiss this predominantly black male trend as "just entertainment," but if this is "entertainment," why are the main ones being paid to do it -- BLACK MEN?
Of course, there are exceptions to any rule. Yes, there are (a few) white males who have ventured into the world of nylons, panty girdles, and high heels, but they have all returned with nary a french-manicured scratch on them.
The main difference between the occasional (almost rare) white male entertainer in drag and the (all too frequent) black male in drag is...
You know the white man IS a man wearing a dress to accomplish a specific goal, like Robin Williams in "Mrs. Doubtfire," so he can spend time with his kids -- like any REAL MAN would.
And once this white man accomplishes his goal, his dress comes off and he's a jockey-wearing man again, and to prove it, he's trying to take some WOMAN'S dress off.
Also, the white male entertainers/actors have a wide variety of roles, from criminal to hero, so NO ONE is confused that the white man overall is a REAL MAN.
However --
Most of the black males in drag are playing the roles of actual women. Nowhere in Big Momma's House, does Martin Lawrence take off the dress and makeup and declare himself a real man.
In addition, the numbers of black actors in movies is not common enough for half to be portrayed as WOMEN. What kind of message does this send to young black males, many of who do not have a father or positive male role model in the home? What price are black people paying for our "entertainment?"
The question is often asked, "Why does Hollywood make so many black-males-in-drag movies and TV shows?"
It's a question comedian Dave Chappelle probably asked himself, just before he turned down a $50 million Comedy Central deal, and an offer to wear a dress on his show.
Here's one possible answer as to why the media powers-that-be love putting black male entertainers in drag costumes:
"To defeat my enemy, I must destroy his manhood. I will turn the black male into my conquered male/female and pay him millions of dollars to wear a dress, two earrings, stockings, and high heels in front of TV and movie cameras.
I will make this conquered black male/female the role model for millions of black men everywhere, so the entire world can see that no matter how rich or famous or talented or successful the black man is, he is still a white man's bi*ch."
During an appearance on Oprah, Dave Chappelle reveals the the time he was asked to wear a dress...

Good question.
I'd say the ones who are handing out the money are guilty of using their superior positions to psychologically oppress those in an inferior position. No matter how much money a black entertainer makes, someone more powerful signs those checks.
The ones accepting the money must share some of the blame, for allowing themselves to be used against their own people (and in the long run, against their own self-interest).
And finally, the black individuals who do not benefit at all, but actually PAY to see themselves degraded, must take their share of the blame. If black people did not support these BM and BF entertainers (buffoons) they?d stop making these movies, TV shows, and music.
Will people do anything for money? Maybe, but there are exceptions. The white male would NEVER allow black men to pay him money to make movies degrading white females in the manner that black females are degraded.
The white male knows this is a reflection of HIM as a MAN, and he knows that the rest of the world would look at him and ask, "What kind of man does not protect the honor, reputation, and image of his own women?
This is something ALL black men need to think about -- and something black women need to think about before they spend another dime on a movie, or CD that degrades them.

I'm glad there are folks like you who understand the power of negative imagery and black male buffoonery. These are the same images they used against blacks after slavery to JUSTIFY segregation
and at least black folks back then had the GOOD COMMON SENSE to resist and resent these images
unlike so many black folk today who will DEFEND their own degradation -- as long as it's "entertaining"
and all this comes from our assimilation into a white supremacist culture to the point where we start to think like white folks ABOUT other black folks....

when people say to me, "we need another black leader like MLK"
I say, "no, we need to be our OWN leaders, one leader at a time, and everybody doing one thing, OR not doing the wrong one thing, makes a spiritual shift in the world,
just like it takes millions of pebbles of sand to create a beach
there is the power of one that can be multiplied by multiple powers of one to make a POWERFUL CHANGE on the planet.
folks might be surprised at just how powerful we are as individual, spiritual human beings if we turned our mental and physical energies to good.

Thanks Cram for all your insightful posts on this website. I have not seen any of the movies, etc. showing black men in drag and don?t care to. However, it is so refreshing to know that others out there are aware of the tricks the white supremacist culture continues to pull on us with this kind of stuff. I often feel alone when I can see so many black people doing so many self-destructive things and other BM/BW around me seem to be in total denial and say it ain?t happening. This includes people that I even thought knew better. You are right that we are so assimilated that we have begun to think like our oppressors. This is causing mass confusion because the way he thinks goes against us, and if we think like him, we are in essence going against ourselves. Thanks so much and keep up the good work.

I was going to post this in my next blog but I'm going to include it here: This excerpt came from the book, ?The Lost World? by Michael Crighton (which I believed was later renamed Juraissic Park)
----
"Humans are born with very little instinctive behavior. Instinctively, a newborn infant can suckle and grasp but that's about all.
Complex human behavior is not instinctive at all. Human societies had to develop education to train the brains of their children, to teach them how to act.
Every human society expends tremendous time and energy teaching its children the right way to behave. In simple societies, like in the rainforests, every child is born into a network of adults responsible for raising the child, not only the parents, but aunts, uncles, grandparents, and tribal elders. Some teach them how to hunt or weave; some teach them about sex or war.
But the responsibilities are clearly defined and if the child does not have a mother, father, or brother, the people get together and appoint a substitute.
Because raising children in a society; is the reason society exists. It's the most important thing that happens and the culmination of all the tools and languages that has evolved."
------
this was profound: the idea that the ONLY reason
for having a society in the first place is to raise our children.
That is the fundamental truth for human and animal society. To perpetuate the species by PREPARING, RAISING and TAKING CARE of the YOUNG so they will survive and keep the species going.

To which you would believe that most people understand that.
But there are many who do not see things that way, they see children as a burden, and see helping their fellow man or woman as a burden to their selfish selves, unless they can directly, immediately and solely benefit.
No sacrifice will be made.........without prompting and sometimes even begging.
Show me a man that will see a need and meet it without being asked........and I'll show you my next hubby.
Well, I got jokes.
Hope all is well.

you are absolutely right.
I think about it this way. Look at all the time, money, personnel, bureaucracy, politics, nonsense --and the American educational system is still MIS-EDUCATING and UNDER-EDUCATING black children...
and after 12 years, our kids still can't balance a checkbook, change a flat tire, or read a credit card application...
why? because this system doesn't teach them ANYTHING USEFUL but fulfills the REAL INTENT of making them dislike reading, writing and arithmetic...so they will be semi-illterate, ignorant, FINANCIAL SLAVES as adults
I'm telling u, if they wanted to fully educate children, they could do it. So, we know that is NOT the true intent.
My partner -- who is truly my MENTOR -- and a man I respect and hope to rise to his level one day -- had 13 children with ONE WOMAN -- and he HOME-SCHOOLED EVERY ONE OF HIS CHILDREN
He kept the TELEVISION OFF and kept them reading and discussing and questioning the world and he would TALK TO THEM ABOUT THE WORLD AND LET THEM ANSWER QUESTIONS and NEVER told his children to
"shut up"
"get out of here, with you stupid black"
"get over here with your ugly black a____"
AND
he didn't beat them OR curse them because he was mad at his boss, at the guy down the street, or mad at the world..
and he and his wife cooked REAL FOOD and never fed them fast food because it was "easier"
Every single one of his 13 KIDS went on to college, graduated, and are living productive lives, a few running their own companies, and have a sense of who they are and what they are capable of doing.
He has several sons and NONE HAVE BEEN TO JAIL
my point is, because he MAINTAINED CONTROL over the education of his children at the earliest age, during a time in which their self-esteem was being formed
the educational system was not able to DESTROY their intellectual potential OR their intellectual self-confidence. They didn't know they were supposed to be DUMB or INFERIOR because they were black because they were not in an (mis) educational system that taught them that.
They didn't grow up thinking white people invented, discovered and created every d____ thing because they did not get their education from a SYSTEM that taught them lies about themselves...

soundreplacer,
LOL, Well I’m glad I have such a good ‘following’ from the people here on BP, as it were…
Awwwww, you poor thing! Did I hurt your feelings by making a generalization about whites???
I’ll tell you what, when black people and white people change my mind COLLECTIVELY and personally, I shall change my stance….Until then, I call it like I see it! You don’t like it, CHANGE IT or IGNORE IT…
You type of people kill me, you hate to realize ANYTHING about people in this world generally because it would FORCE one as a black person, to REACT to the atrocities before you, and it would FORCE a white person to REACT to the atrocities committed….Both groups would rather laugh and smile in each other’s faces…MISS ME..
Now was that more clear and concise for you?

I see u jumped right on this story…lol
—
Of course, this is a terrible thing, but it was all very predictable and falls in line with OUR history in this country. If black folks KNEW our history AND the history of whites — particularly when the economy is extremely bad — we would have KNOWN this kind of thing was going to start happening.
—
And we would know that hard economic times in the past often led to race riots, like the ones in Chicago around 1919, where whites came into black areas and attacked random blacks. THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE DISARMED BLACKS IN NEARLY EVERY MAJOR US CITY WHERE WE ARE THE MAJORITY BY USING “GUN CONTROL” LAWS.—
The bubbling soup called “racism” includes the ANGER that has been building in the white male population, courtesy of the Rush Limbaughs, the economy, Obama’s election, the (false) “browning” of America, and the false myth of “reverse racism” and “reverse discimination” against white males, all media-manufactured HYPE designed to enrage the white male.
—
And there is one more bone I would add to the soup: the large number of BM who are sexing, freaking with, breeding with, and dating white females.
—
I have warned BM who insist on sleeping with their oppressors’ females, to watch their backs as the economy gets worse. That IR is promoted by the media for BM because it allows the poor a___ WM o focus his rage on sometthing other than what the white elites are doing to him, and use the BM as the scapegoat for the average WM”s rage
—
Not to be a smart a___, but I warned BM about the danger of allowing ourselves to become disunified and divided a few years ago, that we would be even bigger targets if Obama won AND if we kept on screwing around with these white females INSTEAD of building up strong BLACK communities where we would be able to PROTECT ourselves, our BLACK women, and our BLACK children.

@ MisterUnderstood who said, “t is interesting to note though that you mention MLK considering that toward the end of his life that he was even quoted saying that it was a mistake integrating into a burning house and was observed coming to agreement with men like Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey.”
–
looks like they were right, because this “house” is burning down around us with black folk sustaining 3rd degree burns. The root of his mis-idenfication with white folk is TOO MUCH TV, ENTERTAINMENT, AND MOVIE-WATCHING, and TOO LITTLE READING
–
a lot of us have begun to judge our “reality” by the non-reality on TV land, while ignoring the reality staring them in the face. For all this “talk” about dating and sexing and loving outside our race, it’s real telling that MOST of these IR relationships don’t last, and in FACT, don’t last as long as black/black relatonships. So much for “real love”
–
what most BW who give IR a shot will find is the white male is of the SAME mindset that white males have always had toward black females: sexual experimentation then go back to practicing racism (remember Dr. Laura’s black female caller?)
—
The same is true of a lot of black-D___K-loving white females, they’re just messing around, and really don’t care about black males or black people, which explains why WF can be so sexually aggressive — because a BM’s opinion of them CARRIES NO WEIGHT.
–
even marrying black folk doesn’t change anything because those white spouses will STILL deny that racism is a big problem, do NOT want to talk about it, and WILL NOT do anything to help the black victims of racism, including their own black spouses and half-black kids. I know this, and have seen this countless times, where in order to “get along” with that white spouse the black person has to “tone down” their blackness and complaints about racism.
–
guess some black folk have to learn the hard way…

the white man knows how to get power and keep it -- RACIAL UNITY. He may beat his women in private but he UPLIFTS them in public, and makes sure that no woman of color is EVER placed above the white female
even Malcolm X, Farrakhan and the late Honorable Elijah M. talked about a "nation can rise no higher than it's female."
why did they say that? BECAUSE IT'S TRUE.The woman is a REFLECTION of a man's STATUS, his self-respect, and his place in the world
that's why the WM puts his woman on a public pedestal because he came from a WW and if she is up there, so is HE
and that's why the WM in power encourages the black man to DEGRADE our women via rap music, Norbit movies, comedy routines, IR-dating, magazine articles putting sisters down, etc

@ AfricanS who said, "Okay, we know this but at what point do we start making and controlling our own images? We know white people will not show the images we want to see for ourselves so why can't we create them?"
ME: brother, I wish it was that simple. They got black folk on the payroll who are enabling this to happen, black actors and actresses, black comedians, black directors and producers and writers, we got so many black SELL-OUTS that we can't trust anyone connected to the industry
I mean, NO ONE...
I agree that it has to be done, and it must be done at the grassroots level, and black folk will have to STOP supporting the mainstream media/entertainment industry, including so-called black celebs and stars like the black fool on Flavor of Love, and all that kind of bullshyt
the problem isn't that we can't create the images, the two biggest problems as I see it is:
#1 -- getting the images distributed nationwide and world-wide so that black folks can see them
#2 -- getting black folk to STOP SUPPORTING the entertainment industry via CDs, DVDs, TVs, movies, etc that degrade black folk
And that's what we're working on after this second book
AfricanS: "This is part of a project I am working on... Will need your help later on this... Since you are in animation, arts and media..."
ME: will do

that BW has raised a daughter who will probably bend over backwards (and forward) trying to find a white dude who will use her for more than a part-time pin cushion, and will probably work on behalf of white supremacy -- against her own people
seen too many white-identified negroes like this in my short lifetime....i know the script.

A..crammasters is on my friends list.I’ve spoken to him before and love what he has to say .
1.because he is truthful but respectful. But A, he is a small minority.Where are the rest of him backing him up? Why doesnt he have a following like rappers do?
The reason people speak out because for some reason,it is perceived that black families donot do these things.
I for one know first hand..I cant tell you how astonished I was growing up that many people, even blacks ,just assumed that we dont have fathers and mothers in the home. And hell, when they did find out, most of the time,I was treated differently.Like I wasnt apart of the same struggle when in fact,it was anything but when it comes to society.
Should it be news? of course not,but thats not the world we live in anymore.this world is run by media period. And media unfortunately is raising many of us .how sad.
So,people are going to have to make these kind of things public for the world to see because what they are showing is hurting many of us.
What MICHELLE IS DOING WITH HER FAMILY IS NOTHING NEW. I come from women like michelle and men too.. To me,what she is doing is the way it should be.And their are many more like me even though most believe women like us are non existent and a fairytale.
And with technology advancing the way that it has, were every person on this earth has access to anything anywhere, we better start using this technology more to help speak up and counter the negative images thats constantly being shown about minorities and especially black women.

@ A……….We praise people that are doing things that they should be doing because there are many as you stated like the oversexed or dumbed downed that are taking over and putting out messages that many kids and adults are following that have a negative impact on society..
With that being said, one of the ways to counteract the negativity,is to continue to speak out against what is negative and speak up about positive things that can help change one persons life. Why,because one life is worth it.Even if everyone else is giving up and in to do what everyone else in society is doing non healthy things that seem to be destructive to a community, family values and whatever else. For anything to succeed,it must have structure.Even people. Michelle and Barrack have that.It shows in the family they created together,in their children. So it would make sense for anyone who had this kind of structure in life that turned out to be extremely helpful in raising productive people and becoming productive adults ,to continue to SPEAK UP and SHARE their WAYS.Because their messages certainly are not harming society..
We will continue to speak out about people who are doing the right things, and talking about messages that will positively have an impact on people’s lives, little girls lives,a womans life,a mans life.
And quite frankly,Im astonished to see everytime something is written about this beautiful mother of two,THIS FIRST LADY,,when she’s trying to show those who may not have had the upbringing and structure she has had, being criticized, and talked about as if what she stands for is not of any importance.
Where are the so called BLACK MEN speaking about women and men being more friendly and supportive of each other? Not so much that we cant disagree, but when a person never ,,ever ,,has anything supportive or at least making an effort to show .
This article is about a woman who has standards about how her kids will be raised and has sense enough to know that just because everyone is doing something, doesnt mean her children will be apart of that.Because the internet is not regulated, their are things that children of certain ages should not be privied to.She is saying, introduced things in society in stages to you kids when they are ready for it and have a strong mental head on their shoulders. They get that from parents at home who are training and teaching them patience about growing up.Regardless how fast ever other kid is growing up.The message is ,be responsible and care for what is yours and be concerned about what they are into to do something about it.
Kim kardashian has nothing to do with how MICHELLE is raising and teaching her young daughters.
As a matter of fact, its very clear to me that if KIm had a mother like MICHELLE, she wouldnt be so confused as a woman of what to do and not do.
The nit picking and pulling people apart is very counter productive and for people always screaming about unity and support, some of these messages are anything but……Especially the relationships between men and women and especially how we talk to and try to understand where we as black women and men are coming from to at least show a little more support for one another and the things that we care about.
Everything isn’t a fight…..

@ A_MANI_LOVE
brother, I was puzzled by her post, too, and her ethnicity. Didn’t bother to check her page but I wouldn’t be surprised if what you said was correct.
–
it never fails to amaze me why so many white folk who don’t like black folk seem to gravitate to black websites, as though they have to keep tabs on what we are saying and doing.
–
Their mentality reminds me of that niccolo machiavelli saying:
keep your friends close
and your enemies closer
