Some Islamists will never figure it out. Hundreds of them have staged a protest in front of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo to demand the release of an Egyptian cleric Omar Abdel-Rahman who is imprisoned in the United States for plots to blow up New York City landmarks.

The leader of this protest is said to be one Abboud el-Zomor, who was released from an Egyptian prison in March after serving multiple sentences for his role in the assassination of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The blind sheik Abdel-Rahman had issued a fatwa calling for Sadat’s assassination and founded the group claiming responsibility, al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya.
Sheikh Omar Abdul-Rahman was also a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a group compromised by British intelligence. In addition, he was associated with Faisal, the Islamic Bank of Egypt, part of the banking empire built by Saudi Prince Mohammed al-Faisal. Its success in the 1970s was closely associated with the neoliberal free-trade philosophy of the Chicago School of Economics and the free-trade prescriptions of the International Monetary Fund (see Robert Dreyfuss, Devil’s Game: How the United States Helped Unleash Fundamentalist Islam, pp. 164-175).
Despite this and his presence on a U.S. terrorism watch-list, Abdul-Rahman entered the United States on a “much-disputed” tourist visa issued by an undercover CIA agent. He was a much prized asset and intimately involved with CIA and Pakistani ISI efforts to defeat the Soviets in Afghanistan. The CIA issued him visas to come to the US starting in 1986, even though he vowed to overthrow the U.S. and Egyptian governments.
Abdel-Rahman was a crucial element in the intelligence effort to create the terrorist boogyman in the United States, an effort that fed into the government created hysteria following the false flag attacks of September 11, 2011.
In 1993, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was quoted in an Egyptian newspaper as saying Sheikh Omar Abdul-Rahman had worked with the CIA. Under pressure from the US State Department, the newspaper’s editor retracts the story a few days later.
FBI agent Tommy Corrigan said that prior to Abdul-Rahman’s arrival, “terrorism for all intents and purposes didn’t exist in the United States. But [his] arrival in 1990 really stoke the flames of terrorism in this country. This was a major-league ballplayer in what at the time was a minor-league ballpark. He was… looked up to worldwide. A mentor to bin Laden, he was involved with the MAK over in Pakistan” (See Peter Lance’s Triple Cross, pp. 53).
MAK, short for Maktab al-Khidamat, channeled money to Afghan fighters that would later become al-Qaeda and the Taliban. It was essentially a creation of Pakistan’s ISI and the CIA,” MSNBC reported in 1998, before the official version of 9/11 events was established and contrary information was shuffled off to the memory hole. The U.S. government has admitted MAK was the “precursor organization to al-Qaeda.”

MAK’s branch in Brooklyn was known as the Al-Kifah Refugee Center. Mustafa Shalabi, who ran that outfit, picked up Abdul-Rahman at the airport when he first arrived on his CIA obtained visa and found him an apartment. Abdul-Rahman immediately began organizing a militant Islamic network that would later serve to establish the illusion that Muslim terrorists were plotting terrorist events aimed at freedom-loving Americans. It is said another CIA asset, Osama bin Laden, paid Abdul-Rahman’s living expenses.

He was shepherded and protected the entire time he is in the United States, the country he supposedly so vehemently hated. He left and reentered the country numerous times, despite being on a terror watch-list. In November of 1990, the State Department revoked his visa, but he continued to come and go with ease. Following a damning New York Times article on him, the Immigration and Nationalization Service investigated his continued presence in the United States.
The CIA would later block an investigation of Abdel-Rahman and his group and their involvement in the 1993 WTC bombing. New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau concluded that the CIA may have pressured the FBI to back off from evidence which led to Abdul-Rahman and ignore other leads in the case.
Elements within the FBI cooked the bomb for Abdel-Rahman’s plotters and allowed the explosion to occur on February 26, 1993, at the WTC. The explosion killed six and injured thousands. “The informer was to have helped the plotters build the bomb and supply the fake powder, but the plan was called off by an F.B.I. supervisor who had other ideas about how the informer, Emad Salem, should be used, the informer said,” Ralph Blumenthal wrote for the New York Times on October 28, 1993.
Political activist Ralph Schoenman and others later speculated that Salem had in fact arranged the bombing at the behest of the government. Abdel-Rahman was convicted in a related case to blow up the United Nations, the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and a federal building housing the FBI.

Regardless of his street cred as a terrorist who vowed to attack the Great Satan, the United States, the fact Sheikh Omar Abdul-Rahman worked with U.S. and British intelligence should send up buku red flags for any self-respecting Islamist.
As I noted in 2005, Abdul-Rahman’ connections to intelligence are easily discovered. Either the Egyptian Islamists who embrace this long-time CIA operative are ignorant or simply choose to ignore the facts. Once again, they are in the process of setting themselves up to be used. Obviously, the CIA keeps playing the Islamist card because they are so easy to dupe.
