Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The woman who is the head of the Democratic Party in South Carolina has apologized for saying the only qualification vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has is she didn't have an abortion. The comment from Carol Fowler, whose husband previously ran the national party, caused controversy yesterday.

As LifeNews.com reported Wednesday, Fowler said McCain had chosen a running mate "whose primary qualification seems to be that she hasn't had an abortion."

Earlier this year, Palin and her husband decided to keep their disabled baby Trig, who has Down syndrome, even though 90 percent of babies with the condition become victims of abortion.

Late Wednesday, after condemnations of the attack came in from across the country, Fowler apologized.

"I personally admire and respect the difficult choices that women make everyday, and I apologize to anyone who finds my comment offensive," Fowler said in a statement, according to AP.

"I clumsily was making a point about people in South Carolina who may vote based on a single issue. Whether it's the environment, the economy, the war or a woman's right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue," she continued. "That was the only point I was attempting to make."

Obama spokesman Nick Shapiro told AP that Fowler's remark doesn't represent Barack Obama's thinking.

"Obviously this does not reflect our view," Shapiro said.

Molly White, the founder and director of Redeemed for Life and Women for Life International, told LifeNews.com the Fowler comment was also "offensive to women who have had abortions and are now very actively pro-life."

"I am passionately pro-life because I have had an abortion," she said. "After having two abortions and after interviewing and counseling hundreds of women who have had abortions, I can tell you that abortion is one of the most destructive choices a woman can make."

White said Fowler’s thinly veiled apology "is equally disturbing."

"Saying that she personally admires and respects the personal choices that women make everyday implies that she admires women who have chosen abortion, but not a woman who has had the same choices presented to her but gave birth to her children instead," White said.

"Women who have had abortions and have healed from the multiple destructive psychological and physical consequences admire Gov. Palin for not falling for the rhetoric of choice," White continued. "Women who were once pro-choice are now pro-life because we have learned the hard way that abortion hurts women."
