DIANA: It's a whitewash

Geoff MarshDaily ExpressThursday, December 14, 2006

THE official report into the death of Princess Diana was dismissed as an "establishment cover-up" tonight.

Harrods owner Mohamed al Fayed, whose son Dodi died alongside Diana in the 1997 Paris car crash, claimed Lord Stevens’ three-year investigation was "garbage".
And he even branded the former Metropolitan Police commissioner a "mental case" for dismissing the theory she was murdered.

His furious comments came after the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Paget inquiry concluded the couple and their French driver Henri Paul simply died in a tragic accident.
Lord Stevens also denied MI6 had anything to do with her death and rubbished claims Diana was pregnant when she died and was planning to marry Dodi.
But Mr al Fayed pledged to continue his fight.
He said: "I will never accept this cover-up of what really happened. For nine years I have fought against overwhelming odds and monstrous official obstructions.
"I will not stop now in my quest for the truth. It is the only thing I can do for those two wonderful people who lost their lives."
A team of 11 British detectives examined conspiracy theories surrounding the Paris car crash which killed Diana, 36, and 42-year-old Dodi in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel on August 31 1997.
Lord Stevens said the primary purpose of his investigation had been to decide whether there was "credible evidence to support an allegation of conspiracy to murder" in relation to Diana’s death.

He said that at the heart of Mr al Fayed’s allegations was his belief that the crash was a murder resulting from a conspiracy by the establishment - led by Prince Philip - because of the relationship between Dodi and the Princess of Wales.
But Lord Stevens said he had carried out "every reasonable line of inquiry" and found there was no evidence to support these "extremely serious" allegations.
He said: "We are confident that the allegations made are unfounded.
"There was no conspiracy to murder any of the occupants of that car."
The report found there was no evidence of any link between the Duke of Edinburgh and the Security and Intelligence Service (MI6) and Lord Stevens said Diana "was not engaged and was not about to get engaged".

He added: "Prince William has confirmed to me that his mother had not given him the slightest indication of such plans for the future."
Diana and Dodi’s driver Henri Paul had been drinking on the night of the crash and had an alcohol level of around 1.74 grams per litre at the time of the crash - about twice the British drink drive limit.
Lord Stevens added: "Three people tragically lost their lives in the accident and one was seriously injured.
"Many more have suffered from the intense scrutiny, speculation and misinformed judgments in the years that have followed.
"I very much hope that all the work we have done and the publication of this report will help to bring some closure to all who continue to mourn the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales, Dodi Al Fayed and Henri Paul."

The inquiry report said DNA testing had confirmed that the blood samples which established that Henri Paul had been drinking were genuine.
Lord Stevens even claimed that had Diana, Dodi and Henri Paul been wearing seatbelts, they might not have died.
But MI5 whistle blower David Shayler said the results of the Stevens Inquiry didn’t add up and warned conspiracy theories would continue to circulate.
"We should not just accept what comes out of Government. We have all seen what happened with the Hutton Report, which was a complete whitewash, so we should not really trust official inquiries.
"There will be some loose ends to this issue that will never be tied up."
Prince William and Prince Harry, who were told the results of the inquiry yesterday, said they wanted the "conclusive findings" to end the speculation surrounding the crash.
A statement from Clarence House said: "Prince William and Prince Harry have received a copy of the report from Lord Stevens personally.
"They are extremely grateful to Lord Stevens and his team for the thoroughness and professionalism they have shown during their investigation, and trust that these conclusive findings will end the speculation surrounding the death of their mother Diana, Princess of Wales."

The report paves the way for Diana and Dodi’s inquests to go ahead.
Lady Butler-Sloss, who is now in charge of the inquests, is due to resume the hearings next month.
