Connecting the Dots
Drunk with Power (or just simply drunk) by Victor Thorn
A few months ago, vice president Dick Cheney – while drunk – shot a lawyer in the face while on a hunting trip. He wasn’t arrested, no serious charges were filed, and he remains in office today.Over three decades ago, Teddy Kennedy – while drunk – plunged his car over a bridge, and while he survived, passenger Mary Jo Kopechne drowned to death. Kennedy wasn’t arrested, no serious charges were filed, and he remains in office today.Last week, Rhode Island congressman Patrick Kennedy – while drunk – crashed his automobile in the heart of Washington, DC. He wasn’t arrested, no serious charges were filed, and he remains in office today. Here are the details: at 2:45 am, Kennedy sped in his automobile through a construction area with his lights off. During the process, he drove down the wrong side of the road, smashed into a curb, nearly hit a squad car, and then failed to stop when pursued by the police before crashing into a barrier.
Not only was Kennedy not arrested, he wasn’t even given a sobriety test despite the fact that Sergeant Kenneth Weaver witnessed the entire event (he was driving the car which was nearly struck by Kennedy). After exiting his noticeably damaged car, Kennedy was seen to be staggering, appeared intoxicated, smelled like booze, was wobbly in his demeanor, had red watery eyes, and spoke with a slurred tongue.DC officer Greg Baird, and Lou Cannon, president of the Washington fraternal order of police, have both gone on record as saying Kennedy appeared drunk, while the reporting officer indicated on his report that Kennedy was “under the influence of alcohol” and that his “ability was impaired.”In addition, Kennedy has a well-documented history of drug and alcohol problems, and was involved in another automobile accident just three weeks earlier in Portsmouth, Rhode Island where he wrecked a 2003 Crown Victoria. Again, no charges were filed.
Amazingly, Kennedy denies any preferential treatment, and instead blamed his woes on a negative reaction to prescription drugs and sleep medications. He then went one step further and lied through his teeth when declaring, “I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident.”But now, as reported in the Boston Herald (as well as CBS, WCCO, and CNN), a hostess, bartender, and other patrons place Patrick Kennedy inside the Hawk ‘n’ Dove bar on the night of the incident, just prior to his DUI crackup.Instead of getting busted and facing up to his wrongdoing, though, it seems strings were pulled behind-the-scenes to get Kennedy off the hook. According to Richard Sisk and Michael McAuliff of the New York Daily News, “[Officer] Baird complained in his letter to acting Capitol police chief Christopher McGaffin that Kennedy and a pair of sergeants thwarted any proper investigation.”Wait a second. How can a perpetrator – a drunken driver – thwart his own police investigation? Think about it.
What would happen if YOU tried to do that? Isn’t this called obstruction of justice? Also, which specific supervisors were involved in this miscarriage, and precisely to whom were phone calls placed? These same sergeants refused to allow the acting field officers to conduct a sobriety test, then commanded all of them to leave before they “took over” and gave Kennedy a free ride home.Furthermore, didn’t another one of Kennedy’s lies seem strange to them – that he said he was rushing to participate in a House vote – at 2:45 am! Wasn’t it obvious that Kennedy was playing the system because congressmen get a free skate when they’re rushing to cast a vote? Was this one of the tricks that his father Tedddy taught him?
Luckily, officer Baird (chairman of the Capitol police union) isn’t rolling over and playing dead after his men were specifically instructed not to give Kennedy a sobriety test. “This appears to be interference with their duties as U.S. Capitol police officers, and may have prevented the collection of evidence,” Baird concluded. So what happens now? Well, Kennedy – like a cowardly low-life worm – has crawled off to rehab, certain to avoid any further scrutiny, while his daddy and other high-rollers will try to sweep the entire matter under the rug. Meanwhile, Republicans aren’t making too much political hay out of this incident because if they did, they’re afraid the Democrats would bring Dick Cheney’s drunken Elmer Fudd skeletons back out of the closet. The sickness in DC gets more putrid every day, with one dirty hand washing the other. But beware; don’t you get caught drinking and driving, then fleeing arrest, because if you do, kiss your sorry ass goodbye (and plenty of money too). Washington, DC is a sewer overflowing with so much vomit and filth that it makes me ill even thinking about it.
