Born to be Wild

by Victor Thorn

Gather 3,000-4,000 wild bikers at a county fairground, put the band Steppenwolf on stage, and real quickly one begins to realize that the world is a pretty damn good place (at least momentarily). Sure, all the evil still exists, but when you have this many people hooting, hollering, dancing, cheering and clapping – all of them smiling and having a blast; it dawned on me that nobody can take this feeling away from us. “Born to be Wild” John Kay of Steppenwolf sang, along with thousands of others in unison. Yes, we were born wild and free and not under the thumb of some dictatorial monsters who view the world as nothing more than their own personal chessboard where we’re simply pieces to be moved around. And last night as we stood in front of the stage with that call of the wild emanating from a wall of amplifiers, it hit me: we’re as free as we want to be. Surrounding me were cheerful, ALIVE people doing exactly what they wanted to do – and they were having a blast. The end of the world wasn’t coming tomorrow; there was no massive amounts of gloom n’ doom; nobody was harassing them for money; and they weren’t hiding under their beds from Big Brother.

Instead, these people were standing up, raising their beer cans into the nighttime sky, and yelling WHOO-HOO with a rebelliousness that could not be denied! It’s true: too often we become so consumed by the “New World Order” and all that it entails that we lose sight of the fact that we’re given a free will to make any decision we want. And last evening as Steppenwolf rock n’ rolled with the best of them, there wasn’t any place in the world I’d rather be.We can be free, or we can be slaves of tyranny. I know where we stood last night, along with all the other wild ones surrounding us!
