TAMPA V: Dr. Patrick Johnston Of Ohio Responds To Howard Phillips

Dear friends:

I find it hard to consider Howard Phillips sincere in this response.
First of all, he has been made keenly aware of Nevada CP leadership’s justification of abortion, and their candidates justification of abortion, and how this violates the CP platform in the most severe manner possible, all their claims to the contrary notwithstanding. Yet he still holds forth their claim that they are in compliance with our platform as evidence that they are? Incredible!

If the Nevada CP was arguing the killing of infants conceived through rape or incest, or the killing of handicapped toddlers, would Howard Phillips still insist that he should not “direct the internal affairs of any state affiliate”? I don’t think he would. If he would be willing to accept a state affiliate that justified infanticide, then how could he be so critical of the Republican Party? Does Mr. Phillips believe that preborn babies are not as worthy of the right to life as infants are toddlers, or is he being insincere in this response at the expense of the sixth commandment?

The resolution debated in Tampa was to disaffiliate the Nevada CP, not direct their internal affairs. We gave them an opportunity to direct their own internal affairs and bring their leadership into compliance with the platform, and they refused. According to our Constitution and Bylaws, disaffiliation is an appropriate response for Mr. Phillips and the other executive committee leaders if they were committed to the pro-life plank of our platform. If justifying the killing of innocent people does not justify disaffiliation, nothing does.
If Howard Phillips were elected President, would he accept abortion in the fifty states if the rules states that he shouldn’t “direct the internal affairs of any state”? This question may reveal why the CP has not been as successful in the past as we had hoped. God tries the heart and the reins, and if Mr. Phillips hasn’t the courage and the leadership to insist that a state chapter’s leadership stop justifying the killing of innocent children, would he have the courage and leadership as President to insist that a state government’s leadership stop justifying the killing of innocent children?
Howard Phillips has gone the way of King Saul, violating divine precept for pragmatism’s sake. As I meditate on this parallel, I am encouraged that there may be a shepherd boy guarding sheep whom God is raising up. God eyes roam to and fro, looking to show himself strong on behalf of the ones whose heart is perfect toward Him. Gideon’s army had to be whittled down before God could get the victory and the glory. It’s easy for God to bring a man into leadership position, for promotion comes not from the east or the west or the north or the south, but from the Lord. What is not as easy is for God to keep a man’s heart pure and faithful. He commands, He loves, He sends rain, and He shed His blood to win our love, but men resist His Spirit and defy His commands. Saints, let us be encouraged: keep ourselves in the love of God, and be fit should God raise us up to lead.
