Amtrak

Ed, you're going to subsidize the travel no matter what.

The question is, how much subsidy do you want to provide?
According to the Taxpayer's receipt for 2009, if you represent part of a couple with two kids earning $80K you paid via your Federal Income Tax $3.83 towards Amtrak and $110.06 towards the highways that the bus will be running on. A retired couple with income of $100K, then you contributed $3.11 and $89.38 to the highways.
And the highway subsidies are only getting worse. According to Subsidyscope.com, we drivers only manage to cover 51% of the Federal outlays for highways. Most local streets are paved with property taxes, not fuel taxes.
Amtrak on the other hand managed to cover 69% of its costs via fares and other revenue.
The new Lynchburg service made $2.1M in its 1st year.

Norfolk is but one stop on the way to Richmond meaning that this train will serve other towns and cities not served by the current train out of Newport News. At least until they both reach Richmond, at that point they'll both serve the same stations on to DC.
And in 2010, Amtrak covered 69% of all its costs via the fare box, profits from commuter services that they get paid run, real estate, etc.
Contrast that with drivers who only manage to cover 51% of their costs for the highways at the Federal level.
One final note, as I mentioned above, VA thought that they were going to have to subsidize the train to Lyncburg. Instead it turned a $2.1M profit in its first year. It's doing even better in it's second year.

vbnative217,
Yes to all of your questions, although as noted free Wi-Fi is currently in testing and should be finished by the end of the year and available on all trains.
But yes, they have tray tables or you can try to get one of the tables in the cafe car. And yes, Amtrak sells monthly tickets and 10 ride tickets, both of which offer deeper discounts than say using AAA's 10% discount on a single ride ticket.
