Louisiana City Wants to Require Surveillance Cameras

It’s another example of the corporate media selling snake oil on the road to a high-tech control grid panopticon. “Alexandria city councilman wants to require some businesses in town to install surveillance cameras. News Channel 5’s Joel Massey spoke with some residents about the proposal,” reports KALB 5 in Louisiana.
And what did the residents have to say? “I think it would be a good idea to protect people [and] make them feel a little more secure coming in and out of a facility, shopping, knowing that they can come in shop and make it to their car make it home safe without someone approaching them,” said Kechiee Thompson. “I think they should be in any business to prevent crime if there’s cameras out nobody is going to do anything. You can’t hide from a camera,” declared Justin Whitcher.
Such lack of rational thinking emboldens Alexandria council critter Myron Lawson, who wants surveillance everywhere. Lawson wants to pass a law requiring businesses install snoop cameras. “My intention is to not be overly cumbersome in privacy acts because I believe in that but what I am interested in is making sure people have protection we can offer them at an affordable price that doesn’t invade their privacy,” he said.

Call it Orwellian doublethink, that is to say the act of simultaneously holding two mutually contradictory beliefs. On the one hand, Mr. Lawson tells us he is not in favor of “overly cumbersome in privacy acts,” while on the other insisting he is not interested in invading privacy. Of course, snoop cameras don’t actually offer protection and certainly do not prevent crime, but they are useful in making sure citizens understand Big Brother is watching. As well, as in the case of so-called “red light cameras,” they are an excellent way to make money.
In regard to the latter, KALB reports: “The City of Lafayette has installed red light cameras all over town and the controversial issue has prompted much resistance from the community.”Sphere: Related Content
