The anti-British thread in american thought is long established. The US role in the end of the British Empire is largely unknown to most. It comprised political and economic pressure in the wake of the toll that fighting two world wars had on Britain. The financial effect of WW1, the problems of the interwar years and the demands of standing alone against Germany and Italy, gave the US ample scope to replace Britain as top nation. And this she did. In january 1944 the US contribution to the WWII war effort passed that of Britain and never again was there any doubt who possessed the greatest power.
Britain’s ultimate loss of empire and prestige was ultimately our own fault and no-one else’s. We failed in the world of ideas, we were proud of our might, we allowed concept to blind us to real problems, but the fact remains that overall the British Empire was a force for good and the US opposed it and sought to replace it with themselves.
What has the US done with world leadership since 1944? Exactly what Britain did, only twice as bad and twice as fast. The US is broke, corrupt and devoid of ideas (at least in washington and at the seats of power). What is worse is that some in the US still seek to blame Britain for their plight.
