Mary Matalin Does Not Feel Your Pain

For Mary Matalin, foreclosure, bank failures, inflation, and commoners living off their credit cards is little more than “cognitive dissonance.”

Mary Matalin, the neocon side of the Matalin-Carville “not a dime’s worth of difference” duo, believes the economic meltdown is all in the imagination of the “liberal” media.

“Today on NBC’s Meet the Press, host Tim Russert pointed to a new CNBC poll showing that 83 percent of the American public rates the U.S. economy as only fair/poor,” reports Think Progress, as in think Democrat. “Right-wing strategist Mary Matalin tried to brush off that number, stating that most Americans are nevertheless happy about their personal finances.”

Of course, the description of Matalin as “right-wing” is facile, same as the description of Bob Shrum, former Al Gore helper, as a “liberal” is irrelevant. Shrum “pointed out that her statement is false” and “Matalin switched to the well-worn tactic of blaming the media for the problem,” or that is Matalin leaned heavily on the old busted down canard of a liberal, America-hating media, a declaration about as reality-based as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

MATALIN: Well, there’s an element of cognitive dissonance there, because if you ask them how their own personal finances are going, those numbers completely switch. Yes — he’s looking around. Those numbers are completely true. They absolutely switch on their own personal finances.

SHRUM: I think most people are getting very insecure about their personal finances.

MATALIN: That’s because they’re berated with these numbers.

No, Mary, they are “berated” by the Federal Reserve, fiat funny money, and an inflation rate the “liberal” corporate media tells us is in the lower single digits.

Matalin is echoing a popular right-wing talking point. On Feb. 11, former White House adviser Karl Rove claimed that the “media has been beating the drum for years and years and years that the economy stinks. And after a while, that begins to color people’s attitudes.” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) also recently tried to blame it all on the American people by saying that it’s just “psychological.”

Certainly, for fat of the land paycheck types like Matalin and neocon selected decider-commander presidential candidates, the economy is just peachy. Same for Bush’s former brain, who takes his marching orders from Halliburton and the neocons, the latter who think depression is a good idea, as it gets people thinking more about mere survival and less about the immorality of forever war, or at least a century long war, as the Manchurian candidate insists we will get if he is elected.

For the well remunerated Matalin, foreclosure, bank failures, inflation, and commoners living off their credit cards is little more than “cognitive dissonance,” but then, as we are instructed, neocons make reality and we, as spectators, are forced to watch, or maybe that should be forced to sit by while the drive-by unfolds.

Matalin’s better half — well, just a tad — James Carville, who once declared “it’s the economy, stupid,” jumped in to diss his wife:

This is not something created by the media. These mortgages, these high energy costs, these pathetic employment numbers, the health care costs, food costs — they’re just killing people out there. They’re not just being told that things are terrible. They’re feeling this every day.

Of course, this begs the question: how the hell can these two be married, how is it possible they can coexist under the same roof?

Easy. It’s all a dog and pony show, and a profitable one at that.
